The 104 mile route leaves Ripon Race Course and heads through the historic City of Ripon. Almost immediately you are riding on quiet lanes even the local riders will not be accustomed to. We’ve got special permission to take the ride through the Studley Park grounds and then through Brimham Rocks, we’ll get some amazing photos there! Riders will be in big groups through these small roads, the colour and magic of the TDF will be captured again in Yorkshire!
Riders will continue to Pateley Bridge and the first major climb of the day, Greenhow Hill. At 3.5 km and a maximum gradient of 16% it’s one of the hardest climbs of the day, it will certainly wake you up!
A fast decent towards Threshfield where we join the stage 1 route of the 2014 Tour. We head North to Kettlewell and Buckden on bumpy but not too difficult roads before the next serious challenge, the Kidstones TDF KOM. The climb from Buckden lasts 2.9km and totals 185m of ascending however the reward of 6.9km fast steady descent down the other side is worth it.
We then head around to Aysgarth and Hawes, great roads and some amazing scenary. After Hawes we have the toughest climb of the day. The Buttertubs are world famous, the 4.4km doesn’t seem too bad at the bottom and there is a false flat around half way, sadly around the corner things get worse and it seems never ending, usually with a head wind to climb to over 500m.
Descending from the Buttertubs is steep and fast, we loose 200m in 2km, that’s an average of 10%! Soon we’ll reach Reeth and immediately the final climb or Grinton Moor. It’s a sharp steep one to over 400m however don’t despair, it’s downhill all the way to home from here! The last 35km roll downwards towards Ripon with only a few little bumps. You’ll be happy to reach the race course but feel like you have really achieved something special.
The end of a great day and amazing ride!
