All new routes for 2018 starting in the icon town of Whitby, maritime home of James Cook. Follow in his footsteps as you explore the coast and North York Moors with some breathtaking scenery and challenging climbs. But what goes up must come down and every new route has the same amount of descent as climbs making an exciting and challenging ride. Award winning food at our feed stations and free post ride beer, sausage bun and massage.
2018 will be the 3rd edition of this great event. The first edition was great and the event was made really special by the start and finish in Whitby. Riders returned to a beautiful scene of 1,000’s of interested fans welcoming them back to the Regatta.
The routes were popular with all who took part. We’ve made a slight change to all 3 routes in removing the Little Beck section, this makes the long and medium 2km short and 100m less of climbing. However the short now heads over to Goathland and Beck Hole so this is an additional 10km and 100m more climbing! We do like to give you a challenge!
This year the event is part of the Velo29 Sportive Series.
The World famous Regatta, now in its 176th year is one of the oldest such events in the World. The organisers wanted to add an exciting new element to the event. Something that draws young people and families as well as giving those who already attend and the people of the Town a new focus and evolution of this wonderful weekend.
Sportives are great fun events, full of colour and excitement to those taking part and watching. Nothing looks more spectacular than a huge field of riders snaking through the Countryside. We believe this will become a significant part of the Regatta weekend.
The HQ and Start/ Finish is on the Cliff Top near the famous Whale Bone where we’ll assemble on a closed road section.
From there we’ll be briefed and set off in groups of 100 onto this spectacular route. Immediately the roads are superb, as we descend to Sandsend and ride along the sea front the views and feeling are amazing. The most picturesque start to any sportive.
Don’t relax too long though as shortly we’ll be climbing Lythe bank! Step at the bottom then long and drags at the top. It will wake you up, that is for sure!
From Lythe we disappear into the North Yorkshire Moors and the spell binding scenery, quiet roads, stunning little Villages, tough climbs and exhilarating descents before returning back to Whitby, in front of a big public reception to celebrate this wonderful new event!
It’s finally an event you can bring the families too and leave them to have a great day out whilst you enjoy your ride. Even make a weekend of it!
