A Beginner’s Guide to Sportive Riding
What to Expect in a Velo29 Sportive
The Tour of The Pennines, an amazing mix of challenging climbs, amazing descents and stunning scenery in an area which will be new to many of our customers.
An event with over 1,500 riders in the past! The HQ at Barnard Castle is great to access from the East and West, just off the A66. We ride North with the first climb after only 10km known locally as Billy Lane.
It’s lumpy all the way to the first Stanhope Stop after 37km where we’ll enjoy all the really great feed stop treats you expect from Velo29. Here the Medium route (no short option) heads back South with the delightful climb of Unthank Bank (official 100 Climbs number 155), you’ll understand its name on the day! The wonderful thing is that once we crest the 395m summit we descend then immediately we tackle Bollihope Climb, all the way from 300m to 500m in 1 mile!
The long riders will enjoy Crawleyside (official 100 Climbs number 59), Blanchland to Rookhope which is 10km of uphill, Stone Cairn which summits at 539m and Allenheads climb which summits at 573m, the highest point on the course before heading back to the 2nd Stanhope Feed and tackling Unthank Bank.
It’s a superb route, a chance to explore this little ridden part of the World and really test your legs on both the Medium and Long routes.
Don’t miss it.
