A super tough Long Route despite being shorter than a typical V29 Long! A quick look at the profile confirms this is an epic ride!
2 of the UK’s 100 Top Climbs in Crawleyside and Unthank Bank as well as a mix of long drags and super steep hills. However the descents are stunning, some super fast sections that last for miles with great visibility and wide roads you can really tuck in and go for it!
A great event which not many of you will have previously enjoyed.
At 78.2 miles the Pennines Long is one of the shorter but make no mistake, it’s a tough one! We tackle 7,000 ft of climbing over the 78 miles making this as tough as any event in the calendar on a mile v’s attitude basis!
The event is a figure of 8 and we can really consider this an event of 4 parts. The first ¼ breaks us in as we ride from the start in Barnie to the 1st Feed at Stanhope. It drags up initially then tackles some big lumps as we head towards the Feed.
From Stanhope, it’s BANG, straight up Crawleyside! 6km taking us to 479m in the sky! The start is super tough, not too many pies at the feed!
In the 3rd quarter, we’ve got a rapid succession of 3 big lumps, a real shark’s tooth profile! We descend for 12 miles all the way to Stanhope for another feed stop before the final quarter which again delivers! We “blast” straight-up Unthank Bank with its wall-like summit and switchback turns, again watch the pies! The welcome news though is that we descend all of the last 15 miles to Barnard Castle, some record times to be set in that last sector!
