Departing the historic city of Durham all three routes roll toward Lanchester where the medium and long routes break away form the the short route and heads west towards the first feed at Stanhope. From the feed the long route will double back heading towards St Johns Chapel and the Pennines climb of Noon Hill. The route rolls through Newbiggin and onto Middleton-in-Teesdale for feed 2 before the climb up the Belmont Beauty and onto the Roman Road and descend the Bolihope. Hamsterly Forest now awaits before circumnavigating Bishop Auckland you head east and the feed station at Kirk Merrington before hitting the colliery villages of Fishburn and Trimdon. You will cross over the A1(m) twice in a loop back round to Durham passing Durham University’s sports facilities before a small climb brings you past the impressive Palatine Building with only 1km to go.
