A Beginner’s Guide to Sportive Riding
What to Expect in a Velo29 Sportive
Short route riders will set off third in the Whitby Grand Depart and follow the road along West Cliff. Heading North through the beautiful seaside village of Sandsend all routes tackle the climb of Lythe Bank at 2.7miles. The routes now include the climb of Ellerby Bank at 9 miles in. From there everyone head across the A171 and drops down into the picturesque village of Lealholm for the feed stop which include award winning pork pies.
It is here we have our first route split so look out for your correct route after the feed station.
Up out of Lealholm after the feed then dropping into Glaisdale and down to the River Esk BUT! be careful on the descent as it is fast with a tight turn under the bridge. You will now pass Beggar’s Bridge built by Thomas Ferris in 1619. Make sure you are in the correct gear as you will almost immediately be faced with the formidable Limber Hill which is a short sharp shock.
You now have a lovely ride through Egton and great descent into Grosmont the home of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (used as the Hogwarts Express in the Harrry Potter films). Crossing the railway there is a short sharp climb out of the village which bares left and continues along the road to Slights then you follow the River Esk into Ruswarp where you cross the river and take the quiet Larpool Lane back into Whitby where you can enjoy a FREE beer, sausage bun and massage and don’t forget your MEDAL.
