The Stockton Sportive short route is very popular with local riders who are having their first go in a Sportive. It’s a great way to start in organised events and a lovely day out enjoying some new roads with new friends in the North Yorkshire country side.
Literally, anyone can ride and on any bike. You just need to wear a helmet, enter and turn up. The routes are really well signposted, we’ll check your bike (if you want before you set off), there are loads of other first-timers to chat and help each other out and there is a feed station halfway for that well-deserved rest. We’ll even pick you up and bring you back to Stockton if you can’t make it back.
You’ll assemble at Stockton Riverside and receive a briefing about how the day works and any dangers on the course. Lots of staff are there to help you out and we always have 100’s of first timers so don’t worry about that. Everyone receives a detailed event pack before the day telling them what to do, what to bring, where and when to turn up. We love to see new people joining our events so are there to help you whenever you need.
The ride heads through Ingleby and you will follow the 100’s of signs we put out on the course, it’s pretty much impossible to get lost. Soon we leave urban Teesside and head out on quiet roads to Hilton and Seamer in the direction of Great Ayton. From Ayton, we head towards Kildale, again quiet roads in the great North Yorkshire countryside. It’s still pretty flat, there is one drag of note as we ride away from Ayton but it’s really nothing too serious.
Another small drag towards Kildale then a short descent to the feed station. Here the atmosphere is always great, lots of refreshments to enjoy, shelter from the sun and a toilet of course. Stay as long as you want and eat what you can in preparation for the ride back.
From Kildale we head to Battersby and Ingelby Greenhow, the roads remain flat and quiet with lots of nice views to enjoy. We soon reach Stokesley, heading through the town and on towards Seamer. In Seamer the end is in sight, we descend past the new windmills to Hilton, cross at the Fox Covet (don’t be tempted to go in!) and then back through Ingelby into Stockton and the Riverside to cross the line and collapse on the grass with a coffee!
It’s a great ride, challenging enough for those who ride regularly but not too hard for those of us who never got around to the training we planned or just those who have a bike and fancy doing something different, meeting new friends and getting some exercise.
