A Beginner’s Guide to Sportive Riding
What to Expect in a Velo29 Sportive
The All New version of Strade Shropshire!
Our Shrewsbury based event was a wonderful ride on some of the most varied roads and enjoyed by many of you over the years. However, the roads have become a bit too ‘varied’ with potholes and general poor condition. So, here we have Strade V2!
Now based from Wrexham this all-new route enjoys a totally new part of the world for Velo29. We were super excited as soon as we put pen to paper on these new routes! We’ve got some stunning roads lined up for you, some hills of course and some spectacular scenery!
Most of the route is in Wales, hence the dropping of ‘Shropshire’ from the title but sticking with Strade (street) as we rather like it!
aren’t shying away from this being a lumpy ride, from the start all 3 routes head swiftly to the base of Esclusham Mountain and climb from 90 to 450m! By the time we hit 10km, we are at the highest part of the route!
From the crest of Esclusham, it’s a rapid descent to the first feed stop at Llangollen which we hit after only 24km but a good hour of riding, even for the fittest climber!
We use Llangollen Village Hall for all the feeds on this event, the area lends itself well to this and logistically the event is much easier to manage safely with this setup.
The short route heads back East after feed 1 with a very gradual lumpy but not too challenging route back to Wrexham. We’ve intentionally made Esclusham the main challenge in the short route.
Medium and Long head out on a wonderful anti-clockwise loop climbing quickly away from the River Dee up Moel y Gamelin, which is the steepest ascent on the ride, make no mistake, it’s steep!
The River Dee features extensively in Strade, we encounter it first in its infancy at Carrog and follow it for many miles until Trevor when we say goodbye and The River twists its way to Chester.
From Moel y Gamelin it’s mostly downhill (with lumps) back to Llangollen for feed stop 2, your brew crew will be ready and excited to hear about the adventures out on the Moel loop!
Medium head back here to Wrexham along the River Dee, not too hilly, a gradual rise away from the River then a rapid blast down to the finish line.
The Long has another big (high) challenge ahead! We hit feed 2 at 80km and by 85km we are back 367m! We enjoy a rapid but challenging descent for the next 5km before entering what will be the toughest part of the ride! From 80km to 120km we climb and descend a significant 600m!
At 120km it is a major descent to the final stop at Llangollen which we hit at 125km, say goodbye to the brew crew and enjoy easier roads back to Wrexham and a hard earnt medal, BBQ sausage and beer!
As with all Velo29 Sportives, you’ll enjoy our great signage, just turn up and follow the signs, no need to worry about routing. We’ve got our well-established Medical and Mechanical support and the feed stops are well stocked with fresh food, high5 and a very friendly and helpful team!
We think this is going to be one of our most wonderful rides, we can’t wait to see you on the start line in Wrexham!
