A Beginner’s Guide to Sportive Riding
What to Expect in a Velo29 Sportive
The short route leaves Thirsk and heads across to Kilburn with the medium and long route riders. It’s a slight uphill drag for the first 10k though you don’t really notice it, the roads are small, quiet and picturesque from the start.
All the routes stay together past the amazing Byland Abbey and through the gorgeous villages Wass and Ampleforth. Ampleforth Abbey will be on your right as you pass with stunning views of the Howdrian Hills beyond. The route splits from the long and medium at Oswaldkirk and we encounter then the climb known locally as Gilling Pub Climb. It’s 2km long and climbs over 100m, the steepest section is 10% so it’s nothing to worry too much about.
After Gilling it’s pretty flat, a short rest at the feed and some refreshments then a gentle descent down to Kilburn with views of the White Horse Bank.
We drag up slightly from Kilburn then it’s downhill all the way to the finish back in Thirsk.
