After we introduced new routes in 2018 and managed our biggest numbers at Whitby, we have kept the route of 2019 Edition of the Whitby Sportive the same but with a new start location. Do not panic, the new start is only thirty seconds from last year’s start location.
You start in the iconic town of Whitby, maritime home of James Cook and you will follow in his footsteps as you ‘explore’ the coast and North York Moors with some breath-taking scenery and challenging climbs. But what goes up must come down and every route has the same amount of descent as ascent making this an exciting and challenging ride. With award winning food at our feed stations and FREE post ride beer, sausage bun and massage will make 2019 a fantastic event.
2019 will be the 4th edition of this great event and the route changes last year were popular with all who took part and this year the event is part of the Velo29 Ride Yorkshire Challenge which includes the Daffodils and Buttertubs events.
The new start is still on West Cliff at West Cliff Primary School and the event village will be fully enclosed, from here you will be briefed and set off in small groups onto this spectacular route. Only a mile from the start the roads are superb, as we descend to Sandsend and ride along the sea front with amazing views which could be the most picturesque start to any sportive. Don’t relax too long though as shortly you will be climbing Lythe bank! STEEP at the bottom then a long drag to the top. It will wake you up, that is for sure!
From Lythe we disappear into the North Yorkshire Moors and the spell binding scenery, quiet roads, stunning little Villages, tough climbs and exhilarating descents before returning back to Whitby.
This is an event you can bring the families too and leave them to have a great day out whilst you enjoy your ride. Even make a weekend of it!
