Winter Series
Sadly there will be no Winter Series in 2024. Post-pandemic numbers have been too low and costs are too high. We’ve supported the seires but have to draw a line. We aim to be back in the future.

3D Croft Profile
Everyone at Velo29 was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of 2022 North East Trophy Winner – Lewis Smith. He was a kind, polite young man who will be missed by all who knew him. Lewis was dedicated to cycle racing and to honour his memory the North East Trophy will now be called the ‘Lewis Smith North East Trophy’.
There are 3 races each week. 4th Category is an 8 lap 16.8 mile race lasting usually around 45 minutes at Croft. Though the racing is fast and exciting it’s a great place to “cut your teeth” in the competitive side of cycling and learn the craft of riding in a bunch at speed. We have lots of riders who have ridden our Sportives or are brand new to organised cycling events and want to have a go at racing or riders coming from other sports such as triathlon and running. Typically 60 – 80 riders take part, all riders set off together.
We are again running the popular Female race. It’s a 7 lap 22km and usually gets up to 30 Female racers.
Riders use a timing chip with a super accurate system built in the track. You will get a lap time for each lap as well as an overall time and position, so you can track your progress each week.
The 3rd race is for E/1/2/3/4/J/ riders. 4th cat and Female riders who have ridden that days 4th cat or Female race can also ride the E/1/2/3/4 for an additional £10, paid on the day at the signing on desk.
Starting at 12:15 it’s a different format with riders setting off in category groups at approximately 1 minute intervals, known as handicap racing. The race is 15 laps (31.5 miles) usually lasting around 80 minutes, depending on the wind speed. Around 60 – 80 riders take part in this event.
There are 6 races in this year’s Winter Series, we have series points for teams and individuals, lots of you enter large teams which is great.
